Firepower in the Lab: Automation in the Fight Against Infectious Diseases and Bioterrorism by C. Kumar N. Patel,

Firepower in the Lab: Automation in the Fight Against Infectious Diseases and Bioterrorism by C. Kumar N. Patel,
Today's world poses a triple threat to the American population: infectious diseases, contamination of food and water, and bioattacks (biowarfare or bioterrorism). At least 17 countries are producing weapons of mass destruction using viruses, bacteria, or their toxins. AIDS, E. coli contamination, drug-resistant tuberculosis, and virulent flu strains are perhaps the best known of a host of disease threats. What these dangers have in common is the amount of data required to achieve solutions; in some cases, as much as a petabit (1 followed by 15 zeros) of data is required to study large numbers of samples from widespread locations. Firepower in the Lab examines how the nation can combat this triple threat by improving our ability to detect, measure, and monitor harmful biological agents. It explores the potential of today's exciting new laboratory automation and computer technologies as well as the emerging tools of molecular biology -- how we can generate and analyze more data quickly and reduce human hands-on involvement, which inevitably introduces errors. The book discusses how to improve and apply technologies such as robotics, laboratory automation, "lab on a chip", bioinformatics, and Internet control innovations. It reviews lessons learned from our experience with pandemic flu viruses and presents strategies for developing new high-throughput technologies, including how to address the lack of public funding for critical research undertakings.

Automation by Alister Craig,
Automation by Alister Craig,
Automation is the major future trend for many areas in microbiology, molecular biology and biochemistry, among other disciplines. It is an enormously exciting area, where techniques and assays that were once repetitive, tedious and time consuming, can be performed robotically, liberating the time of researchers and hospital laboratory workers for more interesting work. Many techniques have now been automated and often miniaturized, including PCR analysis, DNA/RNA preparation, diagnostic tests (e.g., Pap tests), compound screening and, of course, sequencing. Some major advances, notably in Professor Lee Hood's group, have resulted in the ability to perform thousands of assays simultaneously on a normal microscope slide. Automation, edited by two of the leading experts in the field, presents the very latest experimental techniques explained in detail. This book has succeeded in bringing together researchers at the forefront of clone library construction, genome analysis, sequencing, computation data evaluation and functional analysis, to provide insight into this "new age" of research based on genomic and chemical screening.

Laboratory robotics - Laboratory robotics is the act of using robots in biology or chemistry labs. For example, pharmaceutical companies employ robots to move biological or chemical samples around to synthesize novel chemical entities or to test pharmaceutical value of existing chemical matter.

Laboratory Information Management System - A Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) is computer software that is used in the laboratory for the management of samples, laboratory users, instruments, standards and other laboratory functions such as invoicing, plate management, and work flow automation. A LIMS and a Laboratory Information System (LIS) perform similar functions.

MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory - The MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory was an interdisciplinary research entity at MIT which became one of the most influential and accomplished in the fields of artificial intelligence and robotics. Research at MIT in the field of Artificial Intelligence began in 1959.

FANUC Robotics - FANUC Robotics America, Inc. is the leading supplier of robotic automation in North and South America.
